![]() ![]() ![]() It filled me with a renewed sense of excitement about what we’re about to do here.Epic Games, Inc. “It’s a reminder of this emotional power of music that sets it apart from every other art form. I was getting chills!” he says of watching people preview Fortnite Festival at a recent Epic Games showcase. ![]() It’s been over two decades since Harmonix started fusing rhythm with video games, but imbuing the magic of music into interactive gaming never gets old for Rigopulos. The jam system is also available within Fortnite’s signature battle royale mode, meaning players can stop firing at each other mid-game and start an impromptu band, if they so choose. Brightside” and the vocals from KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See.” By tinkering with the tempo, key and major versus minor scale, players can create on-the-fly mashups that sound surprisingly good - or at least funny. With up to four band members per jam session, players can switch between instruments and songs as easily as emotes, combining, say, the drum part from Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” the guitar riff from the Killers’ “Mr. We’re already actively working on it.”įor more casual gameplay, Fortnite Festival offers a “jam system,” which allows players to interact with each other and the music library in fun, wacky ways. “You won’t be able to use instrument peripherals at launch, but it’s absolutely something that we want to support,” Rigopulos says. There’s one caveat: whereas Rock Band allowed players to jam out in their living rooms using controllers shaped like real instruments - guitars adorned with buttons and a strum bar, a USB microphone and an electronic drum kit - Fortnite Festival players are limited to regular controllers and computer keyboards… for now. “Many of the ideas that you’re seeing in this game are the best and most popular ideas from some of our previous games, but they’re being put together in this new form inside the multiplayer social context of Fortnite,” he says.īecause of this, fans of Harmonix’s most famous rhythm games will be able to slip right back into the groove, selecting between four levels (easy, medium, hard, expert) and dancing their fingers across the buttons to keep up with the song. Still, while Fortnite Festival offers the “first full-blown AAA music game” at no cost, the gameplay itself is nothing revolutionary, and Rigopulos is the first to admit it. A big part of the motivation was: Let’s do the biggest thing we’ve ever done with music and do it in Fortnite, because that’s where we reach the biggest audience.” “That kind of reach is a real privilege for a game creator. “I can have a jam session from my console in Boston with a middle-aged woman on her PC in Brazil and a teenager in Singapore on her mobile device,” Rigopulos says. But when Epic Games acquired Harmonix in 2021, it opened the opportunity for the music gaming company to tap into Fortnite’s unprecedented player base, which last month hit 100 million. With Rock Band, Dance Central and the first two Guitar Hero installments, Rigopulos has spearheaded some of the most important video games in the rhythm genre. “We want to make sure that whether you’re a 14-year-old girl or a 55-year-old guy, there’s going to be something in the game that you’re incredibly excited about,” Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and chairman of Harmonix, tells Variety at Epic Games‘ private New York preview event. With cross-console and online compatibility, players can squad up with up to three other band members. You can customize your avatar and instrument choose between vocals, guitar, bass, keys or drums and select songs by artists ranging from Olivia Rodrigo to Nine Inch Nails. In Fortnite Festival, players can choose between the “jam” mode (more on that later) and the main stage, where they’ll recognize that classic “note highway” format - notes corresponding with buttons fly across the screen like a rock ‘n’ roll treadmill. Those games dominated the late 2000s, but game publishers basically stopped investing in the concept after Activision’s 2015 entry, Guitar Hero Live, fell flat. Developed in tandem with Epic subsidiary Harmonix, the game revives the once-popular, long-thought-dead rhythm genre, which spawned blockbuster hits like Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It’s the very real Fortnite Festival, Epic’s new, free music video game built inside the world of Fortnite. If your number-one consideration is field of vision, look to larger models like Anon’s M4 and Smith’s own I/O Mag XL and 4D Mag, but the difference in performance is relatively small (and the bigger size can be uncomfortable for medium faces). It’s true that the padding and frame at the bottom were visible when looking directly down, but this never caused an issue for me. And finally, the lens’s high-quality build and spherical shape provided great, distortion-free peripheral vision both up and side-to-side. Additionally, the goggles never gave me the tunnel-like effect that’s common with older models and entry-level designs. The relatively low-profile design nicely balances visibility with allowing plenty of space for air to flow to reduce fogging. Medium-fit goggles are rarely leaders in terms of field of vision, but Smith’s I/O Mag immediately stuck out as a strong performer. ![]() To see how it stacks up to the competition, see our article on the best ski goggles. Below we break down our experience with the Smith I/O Mag. We put the I/O Mag through over 30 days of skiing and exposed it to a wide range of conditions, from frigid winter temperatures to wet spring snow. Within their lineup, the I/O Mag stands out as their most well-rounded design: it offers excellent optics and fit, comes with two lenses, and vents extremely well. So the Smith 4D Mag was hard to take off after I tried them.Smith is a leader in optics, so it comes as little surprise that their snow goggles are some of the best on the market. Peter fogs up everything and he did not fog these up either. ![]() The Smith 4D Mag is even better than most Smith Goggles I’ve tried and are better than my IO Mags. I think they are the best in the business. I personally chose Smith Goggles a long time ago because of their Anti-Fogging. It also seems brighter than similarly rated VLT lenses that aren’t Chromapop. That’s as far as I want to go with their Chromapop company regurge but I’ll say that we all felt like we could see much more detail with these lenses than any other. Most lenses let one color through, great lenses let 2 colors through and Smith lets 3 colors through with Chromapop. The detail with all of these, when chosen correctly for the conditions and your eye, are exceptional. You have a lens for every condition and color preference. I have tested almost every Smith Lens from the IO Mag and these have the Smith 4D Mag has the same lens colors. So not only does it help with your field of view/make things safer on the mountain it helps with seeing down when fumbling with yourself, jacket or other gear. I can see my zipper and upper backpack strap when Drift Boarding or Split Boarding, Nick can see his Joint and Peter can see his Peter. Where this is unique is how well you can look down. It is very wide which is good good but that’s nothing new. The Smith 4D Mag field of view is exceptional. I’ll give that to Oakley but the Smith 4D Mag isn’t bad at all. Peter an the others were fine with the regular fit but I think I’m just on the border of being a low nose bridge fit guy to where I like that better. I now own those and they fit me much better. Recently Smith launched the 4D Mag Low Bridge fit that has more foam. The nose bridge doesn’t have much foam and that was my only complaint. The only person it was small for was Davey but the sound didn’t come out well for his take in the review. Normally a goggle this big won’t fit me very well but it fit Peter and Nick just as well. Lifetime 77 Quart High Performance Cooler (Brett Allen) With interior dimensions of 23 to 25 inches long by 12 to 14 inches wide to 14.3 inches high, you can certainly pack a lot into this cooler. The 77-quart cooler weighs in at 29.95 pounds (empty) and once you’ve loaded it with all your goods, it can be quite the beast to move. In the age of lightweight plastics, I’m of the old-school train of thought that weight often speaks to quality and durability. Like its competitors, the Lifetime coolers are built solid and have a comforting weight to them. The first thing I noticed about the Lifetime cooler was its firm build. This was the extent of the packaging and, aside from a small instructional book attached to the padlock eyelet, the cooler was ready for use. The outside of the cooler was adorned with a few brand stickers, a “Certified Bear Resistant” sticker, and a “Made In The USA” sticker, all of which peeled off easily, leaving no sticky residue to be scrubbed off with rubbing alcohol and obscenities. Once opened, there were no unnecessary frills and it wasn’t over packed with unnecessary bits of styrofoam padding to break apart and drift for days across our living room like tiny white tumbleweeds. The cooler arrived as one would expect of any delivery: in a large cardboard box. At just under $200 - a premium price for a relatively premium investment - the cooler arrived the day before our departure. I was disheartened to find it was not and, judging a book by its cover, quickly dismissed it as an inferior brand.ĭays later, during thorough cooler research-by my wife, not me (I’m more of a “fly by the seat of your pants” purchaser)-we (she) found a lot of great reviews for Lifetime coolers and with only days remaining before our road trip, we decided to pull the trigger on a Lifetime 77 Quart High Performance Cooler. At our local Walmart, we came across one lone Lifetime cooler, which, at first glance, I thought was the city’s last remaining Rtic cooler. We hit a number of stores, but all we were finding were sparse shelves and the occasional Igloo or Coleman cooler of more traditional design. A group of friends and I go backwoods camping every summer and we’ve depended heavily on one guy’s Rtic for the last couple of years. You get the picture: In order to meet our needs, we needed to upgrade.įinding a cooler a week after the Fourth of July and during one of the hottest weeks of the summer can prove quite difficult. Up until this point, we’d been getting by on a few small coolers we collected over the years: a 14 by 14-inch cloth cooler given to me at my high school graduation 19 years ago a 12 by 18-inch plastic Igloo that’s probably older than me and an 8 by 10-inch little guy meant to hold no more than a six-pack. In order to avoid the need to stop for gut-rotting fast food every few hours, we decided to pack our own healthier alternatives. Recently, my family and I planned a summer trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which, from our home in Michigan, is a bit of a drive. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably pined over a big ol’ Yeti for years, but could never bring yourself to pull the trigger because you couldn’t afford to miss a month’s mortgage payment. After all, we all deserve to be free of sandwiches made soggy by fast-melting ice, spoiled steaks, and lukewarm beers floating in hotdog tainted water. ![]() Previously, having only seen the severely truncated THE LOVES OF ISADORA (which is now beautifully restored in a British produced DVD and recent Blu-Ray under the title ISADORA)I watched it both times and remember it well. NBC broadcast the complete roadshow version over two nights twice in the early 1970s. "Great movies are rarely perfect movies." It went on forever.īut, inexplicably, not "Isadora." The film that, arguably, contains her single greatest screen performance was absent. Voluminous clips from just about all of Redgrave's important films preceded the award itself. The final nail in "Isadora's" coffin came at The Orange British Academy Film Awards in February of 2010, when Redgrave was awarded its highest accolade, the Academy Fellowship, to an approving crowd at London's Royal Opera House. The film then disappeared from the landscape until it was incarnated, briefly, in the 1990s when a "director's cut," running 153 minutes, was released on VHS (a version which was televised by the Bravo cable channel, with some minor editing of nudity) and then it disappeared again. Presumably, the original version was screened at Cannes, given that it played there as "Isadora," not "The Loves of Isadora." (This conflicts with reports that put the edited version at 131 minutes but, really, what's three minutes when 40 have been cut?)ĭespite its already troubled history, Universal gave Reisz permission to screen the film in competition for the Golden Palm at The 22nd Cannes Film Festival (held May 8-23, 1969), where Redgrave took home the best actress award. ![]() Anyway, based on this one review, Universal panicked, recalled the film and deleted some 40 minutes (shade of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil," a future Universal victim here).īy the time it opened in New York on April 27, 1969, it had a new title - the generic, TV-movie-sounding "The Loves of Isadora" - and, according to Vincent Canby's dismissive review in The New York Times, it ran 128 minutes. Misunderstood, it was promptly panned by The Los Angeles Times (shades of Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" here), although Vanessa Redgrave did get her Oscar nomination, losing - unbelievably - to Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand (oy!) who won in a tie vote that year. Universal, with Oscars in its eyes, rushed the 168-minute art film into a single Los Angeles theatre for one week in December of 1968 to qualify for that year's Academy Awards. Unfortunately, the film was undermined by its studio even before anyone, critics included, got to see it. ![]() Duncan, a solopistic, sexually uninhibited artist who experimented with dance, liberating it, was also a defiant free-thinker, and the like-minded Redgrave tore into the role as if it were a raw piece of meat and she was starving. What's difficult to grasp is a major movie that seems to fall off the map.Ī prime example is Karel Reisz's brilliant, messy Isadora Duncan biopic, "Isadora," which provided star Vanessa Redgrave with her most emblematic, self-defining role. ![]() Invisibility is the trademark of a lost movie. Such films usually come in under the radar. The general personality profile of a lost movie is that it is small and that its original release came with little fanfare. Redgrave's Isadora Duncan entertains herself while her distracted lover James Fox concentrates on his art in Karel Reisz's lost masterwork "Isadora" (1968) ![]() In addition, it’s a good idea to make sure you are taking steps to secure your iPhone, perhaps by using a security key which is now available in Safari following the launch of iOS 13.3.Īpple is also making it easier to improve your iPhone and iPad privacy by locking down the apps that collect your data. Yes, some people like to wait until bugs are ironed out, but it can be dangerous to delay your updates when serious vulnerabilities such as this one are out there and detailed. But I’m still going to get a bit preachy: Please ensure you update your Apple iOS to the latest version as soon as it becomes available. ![]() The issue shouldn’t be a problem if you keep your iPhone up to date, so there’s nothing you need to do. This stops attackers from being able to easily exploit the vulnerability and ensures people can update their operating systems when a fix is available. Because the full fix wasn’t available to iPhone users for some time, the details were not revealed until much later. Thankfully, the issue has been fixed, and it was reported responsibly by Google’s Project Zero. It appears that this vulnerability only requires the attacker to know the user’s phone number to be able to exploit it.” “Typically, they require some user interaction, such as installing a malicious application. “This makes the vulnerability different from a lot of other mobile issues,” says security researcher Sean Wright. One of the biggest concerns about the Apple iPhone vulnerability reported by Google is that it doesn’t require any interaction from the user to exploit. How bad is the vulnerability and how can I protect my iPhone? This should make similar exploits “significantly harder,” from now on, he said. Remote code execution could be achieved through abuse of the “Receipts” feature that lets people know their iMessages have been delivered.Īs a result of the research, Groß has recommended new security measures to Apple, some of which the iPhone maker has already implemented. He demonstrated how an attacker could set up a side communications channel to interact with a user’s device. In the blog, Groß showed how a data randomising security feature called ASLR, which is meant to protect against exploits, is “not as strong in practice.” The video of Groß’s talk is available for those of you who like a visual accompaniment. It’s part of a three part series, which the more technical among you might enjoy delving into. The Google Project Zero blog reveals more details about Groß’s research, which was first unveiled at a hacking conference in December. What does Google’s blog tell us about the iPhone hack? In the next few months, the web app will redirect to /calling.Also in July, a vulnerability was discovered that could enable an attacker to read the files on an iPhone without having physical access to it. Throughout this process users can continue using Meet (original) to join and schedule meetings, but we recommend using the updated Google Meet app to get combined video meeting and calling features all in one place.Īt the same time, Google Meet branding is coming to, but there are no changes to calling capabilities or functionality yet. This legacy client will eventually go away, though functionality will remain in the Gmail tab. It comes as the original Google Meet app has been updated to “ Meet (original)” with a green icon in recent days. These Duo-to-Meet icon updates on Android and iOS start today and will be completed by September, with the Google Play and App Store listings also changing. |
